Beyond
the hardwood forest you will encounter an area of Staghorn Sumac lining
an open meadow that is dominated by Golden Rod. Upon closer inspection,
you will find the saplings of Green Ash and American Elm colinizing
the field. Slowly, these saplings are returning the area to its original
state as a floodplain forest. Before the land was managed a a WVPD park,
this area was grazed and plowed for agricultural purposes, disrupting
the growth of the normally abundant woody species. A walk through the
field could result in an encounter with Warblers, Thrushes, and Song
Sparrows, but watch your feet as a Garter Snake could be slithering
by on the ground.
