Location:
The Winooski Nature Trail Park is located in the City of Winooski, Vermont.
It is owned by the Winooski Community Development Corporation and managed
by the WVPD. The 107 acre park is bordered by the Winooski River to
the south, East Allen Street/Rte.15 to the north, Interstate 89 to the
east, and the Champlain Mill Plaza to the west. The park entrance is
approximately 200 feet to the west of the railroad tracks on East Allen
Street.
Description:
The park is managed as a natural area, its facilities are designed to
provide access to the natural environment with minimal human impact.
There are trails provided for passive recreation including hiking, cross
country skiing, bird watching, education, etc. The park is comprised
of both open and wooded areas, as well as lowlands classified as wetland
areas under the National Wetland Inventory (wetland areas are unsuited
for development and create a wonderful opportunity for conservation).
The park includes areas of floodplain forest, hardwood forest, open
meadow, shallow emergent marsh, and cattail marsh. An interesting aspect
of this park is Gorge Island, a 36 acre floodplain forest located adjacent
to the park in the middle of the Winooski River.
